Context

Optical Ground Stations (OGS) enable laser-based communication between satellites and Earth, offering significantly higher data transmission rates compared to traditional radio-frequency links. These infrastructures rely on highly precise optical systems, telescopes and tracking mechanisms to maintain stable communication links with satellites in orbit.

HITEC Luxembourg is involved in the Optical Ground System Control (OGSC) project, carried out under a programme of and funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). The project aims to improve monitoring and operational control of optical ground stations.

Challenge

Optical ground stations combine numerous mechanical, optical and software subsystems operating in a highly sensitive environment. Variations in environmental conditions, equipment performance or system behaviour can affect the stability of satellite communication links.

Traditional monitoring approaches often rely on reactive maintenance, making it difficult to detect early signs of anomalies or performance degradation.

Solution

Within the OGSC project, Indao is explored as a platform to support advanced data analysis and predictive monitoring. By analysing operational data from the different subsystems, the platform helps identify patterns and potential anomalies that could affect system performance.
